OUR TAKE
A choice about who operates the messaging layer
Photon documents managed tiers and a self-hosted route. Its value to an agent team is the architecture choice: pay for managed access or take responsibility for the Mac-based service.
Draw the infrastructure boundary
A managed subscription and a self-hosted instance allocate uptime, account health and machine operation differently. Decide who will notice and repair a messaging failure before choosing the lower entry price.
An agent process cannot assume the messaging host is always available. Surface a blocked state and a recovery owner rather than producing a reply that never reaches the customer.
Compare equivalent identities
The fetched pricing lists Free, $25 Pro and $250-per-line Business tiers. Shared-pool entry plans should not be treated as the same sender purchase as a dedicated business line.
Group features and other tier details matter if the application works beyond direct messages. Check the actual entitlement instead of treating every API feature as available on every plan.
Own the self-hosted decision
Self-hosting may suit a team with operational capacity and a suitable Mac/account arrangement. Software access alone does not remove carrier, hardware or staff costs.
Photon is a useful architecture comparison. Evaluate its current managed and self-hosted terms separately, with a real incident and handoff plan for each.
The decision in one sentence
Consider Photon when a choice about who operates the messaging layer fits your operating plan, then verify the constraints above.
